Super Typhoon Ragasa Forces Mass Evacuations in China After Deadly Impact in Philippines

Super Typhoon Ragasa continues to maintain its dangerous strength as it moves toward the Chinese coast, after leaving a trail of destruction in the northern Philippines that claimed at least three lives.

Hong Kong on High Alert

Authorities in Hong Kong have raised their third-highest typhoon warning, prompting the cancellation of more than 700 flights. Severe travel disruptions are expected from Tuesday evening, with residents urged to stay indoors and prepare emergency supplies.

Shenzhen Orders Evacuation of 400,000 People

In neighboring Shenzhen, China’s major technology hub, local officials have ordered the evacuation of 400,000 residents as a precaution against potential flooding, storm surges, and high winds. Schools and offices across affected regions have been closed, while supermarkets saw a rush of residents stocking up on essentials.

Storm Strength and Path

The storm is currently sustaining winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) with gusts reaching 230 km/h (143 mph), according to the Philippine weather agency (PAGASA). Meteorologists forecast that Ragasa will maintain its intensity for the next 24 hours before slightly weakening as it nears the Chinese coastline.

Destruction in the Philippines

In the Philippines, Ragasa caused widespread flooding, landslides, and severe damage to homes and infrastructure. Thousands of people have been displaced, and rescue operations are ongoing in the hardest-hit areas.

Regional Precautions

  • Hong Kong & Macau: Schools closed, transport suspended, residents advised to stay indoors.

  • China: Large-scale evacuations underway, with authorities preparing for emergency response.

  • Philippines: Relief efforts continue as affected communities rebuild after the storm’s passage.

Super Typhoon Ragasa has already become 2025’s strongest storm, and with its current path targeting densely populated coastal regions, authorities are warning residents to remain vigilant and follow official safety guidelines.
