Switzerland Edge Colombia on Penalties to Reach FIFA World Cup Quarter-Finals

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Switzerland secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in their Round of 16 clash at BC Place in Vancouver on Tuesday.

The tightly contested encounter saw both teams produce solid defensive performances throughout normal time and extra time, leaving the score locked at 0-0 after 120 minutes.

Colombia created the first notable opportunity in the 21st minute when Gustavo Puerta tested Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a curling effort from outside the penalty area. Kobel responded with an impressive save to keep the match level.

Switzerland responded after the first cooling break, with Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye forcing Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas into action. Despite several promising attacks, neither side was able to find a breakthrough before halftime.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams enjoying periods of possession but struggling to create clear-cut chances. Colombia’s Luis Suarez fired wide during one of the South Americans’ better opportunities, while Switzerland continued to search for an opening.

Extra time brought more excitement. Colombia defender Jhon Lucumi came close to scoring when his header struck the crossbar from a corner kick. Kobel was again called into action, producing another important save to deny Jaminton Campaz.

Switzerland also threatened through substitute Zeki Amdouni, but Vargas made a crucial stop to keep Colombia in the contest. Campaz later missed a late opportunity that could have secured victory for Colombia.

With the teams still level after extra time, the match was decided by penalties. Switzerland held their nerve in the shootout, while Kobel produced a key save against Cucho Hernandez. Ruben Vargas then converted the decisive penalty to send the Swiss side through.

The victory sets up a quarter-final showdown with defending champions Argentina, who advanced after a 3-2 win over Egypt earlier in the day.

This marks Switzerland’s first World Cup quarter-final appearance since the 1954 tournament, which they hosted.
