Junior World Championship 2026: Semi-Finals Set as Rugby’s Top Young Teams Battle for the Final

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

The World Rugby Junior World Championship 2026 enters its knockout stage with four traditional rugby powers competing in the semi-finals, while all 16 participating teams remain in action across placement matches in Georgia.

The semi-finals will be played on Monday in Tbilisi, with New Zealand facing France before defending champions South Africa take on England. The winners will advance to the championship final scheduled for July 18.

New Zealand Face France in Highly Anticipated Clash

Six-time champions New Zealand will look to continue their impressive tournament run after finishing top of Pool B with victories over Japan, Scotland and Italy.

The team has retained most of its successful lineup, making only minor changes ahead of the semi-final. Head coach Kane Jury praised his squad’s progress during the group stage but acknowledged that France will present a major challenge.

France also enter the semi-final with strong momentum after topping Pool D with wins against Fiji, Spain and Australia. The French side has reached the semi-finals in each of the last seven editions of the tournament, highlighting its consistency at youth level.

Captain Lucas Andjisseramatchi and hooker Gabin Garault have been among France’s standout performers, while New Zealand will rely on players such as Cohen Norrie and Bradley Tocker to continue their impressive form.

South Africa Meet England in Second Semi-Final

Defending champions South Africa head into the last four after dominating Pool A. The Junior Springboks scored the highest number of points during the group stage while also maintaining one of the tournament’s strongest defensive records.

Captain Siphosethu Mnebelele has enjoyed an outstanding campaign, leading the team with five tries in three matches.

England, meanwhile, secured their place in the semi-finals after topping Pool C. Despite showing attacking strength throughout the tournament, England will aim to improve defensively against a South African side in excellent form.

Historically, England have enjoyed success against South Africa in Junior World Championship semi-finals, winning all six previous meetings between the two nations at this stage.

Placement Matches Continue

The competition for fifth place begins on Sunday as:

  • Argentina face Scotland
  • Australia take on Wales

Argentina will look to bounce back after missing out on the semi-finals, while tournament top try-scorer Simon Pfister remains one of their key players.

Australia will also be aiming for a strong finish after narrowly missing a place in the last four. The Junior Wallabies have an impressive record in fifth-place semi-finals and will be hoping to extend that success against Wales.

Final Spot Within Reach

With four former champions still in contention, the race for the World Rugby Junior Championship 2026 title promises exciting contests. New Zealand, France, South Africa and England will all be aiming to secure their place in the championship final and continue their pursuit of international youth rugby glory.
