Pakistan, US Make Progress in Reciprocal Trade Talks, Says Foreign Office

Pakistan and the United States have made significant progress in negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement following two days of discussions held in Washington, D.C., according to Pakistan’s Foreign Office.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said the talks took place on July 9 and 10 in a constructive atmosphere, with both sides working to narrow differences and move closer to finalizing the proposed agreement.

Positive Developments in Trade Negotiations

According to the Foreign Office, the Pakistani delegation was led by Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul, who described the discussions as positive and welcomed the progress achieved during the negotiations.

Officials from several government ministries also participated in the talks, with some joining virtually to support the discussions on various trade-related matters.

The two countries agreed to continue working toward the early conclusion of the reciprocal trade agreement.

Focus on Expanding Economic Cooperation

The proposed agreement is aimed at strengthening bilateral trade, improving market access, encouraging investment, and increasing economic cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.

Officials have indicated that the framework also includes collaboration in sectors such as:

  • Energy
  • Minerals
  • Information Technology (IT)
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Other areas of mutual economic interest

Background

Pakistan and the United States had previously reached a trade understanding in July 2025, which included plans to reduce reciprocal tariffs, particularly on Pakistani exports to the US market.

Following negotiations with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the proposed reciprocal tariff on Pakistani exports was reduced from 29% to 19%.

However, changes in US trade policy and subsequent legal developments affected the implementation of those arrangements.

Talks Continue

The latest round of discussions reflects both countries’ interest in strengthening trade and economic relations. Officials from Pakistan and the United States are expected to continue consultations as they work toward finalizing the reciprocal trade agreement.
