Senate Committee Directs Motorway Police to Avoid Checking Marriage Certificates
The Senate Standing Committee on Communications has reportedly directed the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) to refrain from checking citizens’ marriage certificates during routine duties.
The directive was issued during a committee meeting chaired by Senator Pervaiz Rashid, where members reviewed matters related to the functioning of the Motorway Police.
Committee Raises Concerns
During the meeting, Senator Pervaiz Rashid expressed concern over reports that some Motorway Police personnel had been asking travelers to present marriage certificates.
He emphasized that the NHMP is a respected public institution and stressed the importance of maintaining public trust.
The committee chairman instructed officials to ensure that such practices are not repeated in the future.
Discussion on NHMP Handout
The meeting also included discussion on an NHMP handout that drew objections from Senator Saifullah Abro. He questioned why the document referred to senators and sought clarification on how recovered items had been associated with specific individuals.
Motorway Police Response
Responding to the committee, the Inspector General of the Motorway Police said the department’s responsibility is to enforce the law where necessary and avoid making comments about individuals or institutions.
The committee concluded by emphasizing that the Motorway Police should continue performing its duties professionally while preserving the confidence of the public.
