Tropical Storm Karina Strengthens Near Baja as Hurricane Risk Rises

Tropical Storm Karina has strengthened over the Pacific Ocean near Baja California, with forecasters warning that the system could intensify further in the coming hours.

Karina developed over the Pacific on Sunday, August 30, and strengthened rapidly as it moved across an area of unusually warm ocean water.

According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm reached Category 1 hurricane strength, with maximum sustained winds of around 80 mph (130 km/h), before intensifying further.

Forecasters continued to monitor the system closely as conditions remained favourable for additional strengthening.

Karina Moving West Across the Pacific

On Sunday, Karina was located approximately 960 miles (1,545 kilometres) west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula.

The storm was moving west at around 9 mph (15 km/h).

At the time, no coastal warnings had been issued by the National Hurricane Center.

Meteorologists said the system could continue to develop over the next 24 to 48 hours, depending on ocean temperatures and atmospheric conditions.

Possible Weather Impact on Southern California

Weather officials are also monitoring the potential effects of Karina and other tropical weather systems on Southern California.

Forecast models indicate that the region could experience periods of heavy rainfall and elevated humidity, potentially increasing the risk of localized flooding in some areas.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Lewis told KTLA 5 that forecasters were also watching the possibility of additional tropical development in the Pacific.

Warm Ocean Temperatures Supporting Development

One factor contributing to the storm’s strengthening is the unusually warm water across parts of the eastern Pacific.

Forecasters are also monitoring the development of a strong El Niño climate pattern, which can contribute to warmer-than-average ocean temperatures in the region.

National Weather Service data indicated that sea surface temperatures around Southern California were significantly above the seasonal average.

The last tropical storm to make landfall in the Southern California region was recorded in 1939, making direct tropical impacts relatively uncommon.

Residents in potentially affected areas are advised to follow updates from official weather authorities as the situation develops.
