Lahore and Gujranwala Theatres Face Notices Over Alleged Policy Violations
Authorities in Punjab have taken action against several stage performers and theatre managements in Lahore and Gujranwala over alleged violations of government regulations, the Punjab Drama Act and prescribed operating procedures.
The Punjab Council of the Arts (PUCAR) and the Information and Culture Department initiated the proceedings following monitoring reports concerning performances at commercial theatres in the two cities.
The action was reportedly ordered by PUCAR Executive Director Mahboob Alam after officials reviewed alleged violations during recent stage shows.
Notices Issued to Stage Performers
Stage performer Sonia Lal, who was appearing at Shabistan Theatre, received a show-cause notice dated September 12. Authorities alleged that her September 11 performance included inappropriate dance routines and audience participation that breached the applicable rules.
Another performer, Nida Chaudhry, was issued a notice on September 13 concerning an alleged inappropriate performance at Mehfil Theatre. Her hearing has been scheduled for September 16.
Khushboo Khan, also performing at Mehfil Theatre, received a separate notice over allegations related to inappropriate actions and exposure during a September 12 show. Her hearing is also scheduled for September 16.
Action Against Gujranwala Theatre Management
Stage actor Fiza Anand was issued a notice in connection with a September 11 performance at Capri Theatre in Gujranwala.
According to the authorities, the performer allegedly continued her dance routine after an audience member threw money onto the stage.
The theatre management and licence holder were also served notices over alleged regulatory violations.
One of the notices reportedly concerns performances continuing beyond the permitted timing. Another relates to the alleged failure to prevent the throwing of money onto the stage and the collection of cash.
The management has been called for a hearing on September 16.
Theatre Managements Also Receive Notices
Authorities have also initiated proceedings against theatre managements in Lahore over alleged violations involving monitoring arrangements.
The management and licence holder of Punjabi Theatre, Lahore, were reportedly issued a notice after monitoring cameras were allegedly switched off during a September 11 performance.
Similarly, Sitara Theatre and its licence holder received a notice after monitoring cameras were allegedly turned off during a September 13 show.
Their hearing is also scheduled for September 16.
Authorities Stress Compliance With Theatre Rules
The Punjab Council of the Arts has reiterated that commercial theatres are required to comply with the Punjab Drama Act, government policies and prescribed standard operating procedures.
The latest notices form part of the authorities’ monitoring and regulatory process. The performers and theatre managements will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations during the scheduled hearings.
The authorities have indicated that compliance with the applicable rules will remain mandatory for commercial theatre operators across Punjab.
