Manchester City Draw 2-2 With Bayern Munich in Women’s Champions League Return

Manchester City made its return to the Women’s Champions League with a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in the opening round of the league phase on Tuesday.

Bayern Munich, who reached the semi-finals last season, made a strong start at home and took a two-goal lead during the first half.

Giulia Gwinn opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Manchester City conceded an own goal through Kerstin Casparij in the 28th minute.

City responded before the interval, with Beth Mead reducing the deficit by scoring in the 45th minute.

The visitors completed the comeback late in the match when new signing Carlotta Wamser scored from inside the penalty area in the 86th minute. The goal was her first in the Women’s Champions League.

Elsewhere, two-time European champions Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 home victory over HB Køge after scoring in stoppage time.

Inter Milan also began its first appearance in the competition proper with a 1-0 win over visiting Häcken.

Benfica recorded a 2-1 away victory against Juventus, with Marit Bratberg Lund scoring both goals for the Portuguese side.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain shared the points in a 1-1 draw in Spain. Felicia Schröder put Real Madrid ahead just two minutes into the match, while PSG levelled through Sakina Karchaoui’s second-half penalty.

The opening round of the league phase continues as teams compete for points in the new Women’s Champions League format.
