Keir Starmer Announces Resignation as UK Prime Minister and Labour Leader
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party, stating that he no longer believes he has sufficient support within the party to continue in the role ahead of the next general election.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said the key question for the Labour Party was whether he remained the right person to lead it forward. He added that he had received the answer from within the party and was accepting the decision.
Starmer said his decisions in office were always guided by what he believed was in the national interest. He also reflected on his time as party leader, stating that he took over Labour during a difficult period and worked to rebuild its political standing.
He further noted reforms within the party, including efforts to restore public trust in areas such as the economy, defense, and national security. Starmer also said he had taken steps to address internal issues within the party during his leadership.
The outgoing Prime Minister confirmed that he had informed King Charles of his resignation earlier in the day. He said he has requested the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader.
According to the proposed timeline, nominations are expected to open on July 9, with the leadership contest to be completed before the summer recess. This would allow a new leader to take charge before Parliament resumes in September.
Until a successor is chosen, Starmer said he will remain in office to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of power.
In his concluding remarks, he thanked his family for their support throughout his political career and said he now wishes to spend more time with them.
The resignation is expected to trigger a leadership contest within the Labour Party in the coming weeks, with several senior party figures likely to emerge as potential candidates.
