NDMA Issues Nationwide Alert for Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms and Hailstorms Across Pakistan
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) have issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and hailstorms across several parts of Pakistan over the next 12 to 24 hours.
According to the advisory, strong winds, rain, and isolated hailstorms are expected in multiple regions including Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Risk of flooding and landslides
Authorities have also warned of possible flash floods, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods in northern areas due to rising temperatures and rapid glacier melting.
The NDMA stated that current weather patterns are in line with seasonal forecasts, and preparedness measures have already been reviewed at the national level.
Areas expected to be affected
In Punjab, rain and thunderstorms are likely in several districts including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sargodha, and surrounding regions. Islamabad and nearby areas may also experience heavy rainfall and isolated hailstorms.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, wet and windy conditions are expected in major districts such as Peshawar, Swat, Abbottabad, Mardan, Dir, and Chitral.
Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir may see rainfall and thunderstorms in valleys and mountainous areas, including Skardu, Hunza, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and surrounding regions.
Sindh and Balochistan are also expected to receive rain, with possible thunderstorms affecting Karachi, Hyderabad, Quetta, Gwadar, and nearby districts.
Public safety advisory
The NDMA has urged citizens to exercise caution during severe weather conditions and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas. Local administrations have been instructed to remain alert and ensure emergency response teams are ready to act quickly in case of any incident.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and will issue further updates as the weather system develops.
