Pakistan and Italy Sign Agreement to Waive Visa Requirement for Diplomatic Passport Holders

Pakistan and Italy have signed an agreement to abolish visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports, marking a step forward in facilitating official travel between the two countries.

According to a statement from the Pakistani Embassy in Rome, the agreement was signed by Pakistan’s Ambassador to Italy, Ali Javed, and Italy’s Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, during a ceremony held at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Officials from both sides reviewed the full scope of bilateral relations during the meeting, including cooperation at multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and the European Union.

Both countries expressed satisfaction over the growing momentum in strategic cooperation, describing the agreement as a reflection of mutual trust and friendship. They said the move would help streamline official exchanges and strengthen diplomatic engagement.

Ongoing Cooperation Between Pakistan and Italy

The embassy highlighted that Pakistan and Italy already share a broad framework of cooperation across multiple sectors. This includes agreements in education, culture, tourism, science and technology, sports, defence studies, and efforts to combat drug trafficking.

It was also noted that multiple memorandums of understanding have been signed between universities and research institutions, along with several intergovernmental agreements over the years.

Labour and Migration Cooperation

Officials further pointed out that both countries signed a labour mobility agreement in May 2025, allowing Pakistani workers to apply for job opportunities in Italy under a quota of 10,500 positions.

This agreement was described as an important development in expanding employment pathways for Pakistani workers in Europe.

Future Engagement

During the discussions, the Pakistani ambassador extended an invitation for upcoming bilateral political consultations, expected to take place in Pakistan in late 2026.

Both sides also expressed interest in further enhancing diplomatic engagement, including plans related to the inauguration of Italy’s newly constructed embassy in Islamabad.
