Williamson Looks Forward to Playing at Historic Lord’s Ahead of Opening Test
New Zealand batter Kane Williamson has expressed his appreciation for returning to Lord’s Cricket Ground as England and New Zealand prepare for the opening Test of the series at the iconic venue.
Lord’s, often referred to as the “Home of Cricket,” is set to host its 150th Test match this week, adding further significance to the occasion.
Williamson, who has played more than 100 Test matches in his career, said opportunities to play at Lord’s are special for any cricketer due to the ground’s long history and traditions.
He noted that many players in the current squads are experiencing the venue for the first time, making the occasion even more memorable.
Williamson also highlighted the unique atmosphere at Lord’s, including its historic pavilion, traditional setting, and well-known match-day customs that distinguish it from other cricket grounds.
The New Zealand batter has previously performed well at the venue, including a century during a Test match in 2015, which earned him a place on the Lord’s honours board.
Meanwhile, England are considering their playing XI for the opening Test, with selection decisions still to be finalised. Fast bowler Sonny Baker is among the players being considered for a potential debut.
England coach Brendon McCullum praised Baker’s pace and energy, noting his ability to generate high speed and bring intensity to the bowling attack.
McCullum added that team selection will depend on conditions, including weather and pitch behaviour, as well as the balance of the bowling unit.
The three-match Test series between England and New Zealand is set to begin at Lord’s, with both teams looking to start the contest strongly at one of cricket’s most historic venues.
