PGA Championship Sees Tightest Leaderboard in 24 Years
The PGA Championship has produced one of the most tightly packed leaderboards in recent major golf history, with a large group of players separated by only a few shots heading into the weekend.
Conditions at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, have proven challenging, particularly on its fast and undulating greens. Despite expectations of scoring opportunities, the course has played much tougher than many players anticipated.
Unexpected leaders emerge
After two rounds, Alex Smalley and Maverick McNealy found themselves among the leaders, a surprising development in a field featuring many of the world’s top-ranked golfers.
Both players delivered steady performances to stay at the top, with Smalley recovering strongly after a mid-round setback and McNealy maintaining a consistent pace despite late bogeys.
Packed leaderboard creates wide-open competition
The tournament has become highly competitive, with dozens of players still in contention. Rory McIlroy noted that a large number of players making the cut still believe they have a realistic chance of winning the title.
A total of 29 players are within five shots of the lead, including several major champions and world-class contenders.
Historic scoring pressure
Officials and analysts have noted that the scoring spread after 36 holes is among the tightest seen in a major championship in over two decades. The difference between the top and bottom of the cut line remains unusually small, highlighting how closely matched the field has been.
Weekend set for uncertainty
With so many players still in contention, the weekend rounds are expected to remain highly competitive. The combination of difficult course conditions and a tightly packed leaderboard means the championship remains wide open heading into the final stages.
