NDMA Issues Heatwave Alert as Temperatures Expected to Cross 42°C in Pakistan

National Disaster Management Authority has issued a heatwave warning for the period from May 19 to May 26, cautioning that extreme temperatures are expected in several regions across Pakistan.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Center, severe heatwave conditions are likely to affect parts of Sindh, South Punjab, and eastern Balochistan, where temperatures may rise above 42°C in the coming days.

Affected Areas in Punjab

The heatwave is expected to impact several districts of Punjab, including Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Sargodha, Lodhran, Khanewal, Vehari, and Lahore.

Sindh and Balochistan Also at Risk

In Sindh, areas including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, and Badin are expected to experience intense heat conditions.

In Balochistan, districts such as Turbat, Sibi, Lasbela, Panjgur, and others are also under the heatwave alert.

Public Safety Advisory

NDMA has advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take special care of children, elderly individuals, and those with existing health conditions.

Additional Weather Risks in Northern Areas

The authority also warned of increased risks of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, and landslides in northern regions due to rising temperatures between May 19 and May 23.

Sensitive areas include valleys such as Khurdopin, Ashkoman, Dasu, Shisper, and others, where local authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert and ensure precautionary safety measures.
