Samsung Employees Plan Protest Over Performance Bonus Differences

Samsung Employees Plan Protest Over Performance Bonus Differences

SEOUL: Employees in Samsung Electronics are planning a protest over what they describe as a significant difference in performance bonuses between workers in the company’s consumer electronics division and its semiconductor business.

According to reports, the demonstration is expected to take place near Samsung’s Suwon campus on July 16, with several thousand employees anticipated to participate.

Workers Raise Concerns Over Bonus Gap

The planned protest is being organized by the union representing employees in Samsung’s Device Experience (DX) division, which includes the smartphone, television, and home appliance businesses.

Union representatives say employees are concerned about the large difference in incentive payments compared with those working in the company’s semiconductor division.

According to reports, DX employees are expected to receive company shares as part of their annual incentives, while semiconductor employees could receive substantially higher performance-based rewards, depending on business results.

Earlier Workplace Demonstrations

The dispute follows earlier workplace demonstrations in which some employees wore black clothing or black face masks to express dissatisfaction.

Some workers also changed internal profile messages and delayed signing annual salary agreements as part of their protest.

The planned rally represents a further step in the ongoing labor dispute.

Semiconductor Division Benefits From Strong Performance

Earlier this year, employees in Samsung’s semiconductor division reached a wage agreement with the company after labor negotiations.

The agreement includes a performance-based bonus structure linked to the financial results of the semiconductor business. Final incentive payments are expected to depend on the division’s overall performance.

Strong Financial Results

Samsung has recently reported strong financial performance, driven largely by continued demand for memory chips, including DRAM, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and NAND products.

The company is expected to release its detailed second-quarter financial results in the coming weeks, providing additional information on the performance of its individual business divisions.

The ongoing discussions between Samsung management and employee representatives highlight the company’s efforts to balance business performance with workforce expectations as the technology industry continues to evolve.
