Karachi’s University Road Faces Monsoon Flooding Risk Amid Ongoing Construction
Karachi’s University Road could face serious challenges during the upcoming monsoon season if ongoing infrastructure work is not completed on time, according to Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town Chairman Dr. Fawad Ahmed.
Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Ahmed expressed concern over delays in the reconstruction of the stretch between Hassan Square and Nipa Chowrangi, warning that heavy rainfall could create hazardous conditions for commuters.
Road Construction Raises Safety Concerns
Dr. Ahmed said excavation work for the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has left sections of University Road uneven, with open pits and damaged surfaces that may become more dangerous during heavy rains.
He urged the relevant authorities to accelerate construction work to reduce the risk of traffic disruptions and ensure public safety.
Concerns Over Proposed Flyover
The town chairman also questioned the proposed flyover near Disco Bakery, stating that the project may not effectively improve traffic flow.
According to him, a significant portion of traffic from University Road has already shifted to Shabbir Usmani Road, and the flyover could add further congestion instead of easing it.
He suggested that authorities prioritize removing encroachments and improving existing road infrastructure rather than proceeding with the flyover.
K-IV Water Project Could Affect Construction
Dr. Ahmed noted that the planned K-IV augmentation water supply line is expected to pass through Shabbir Usmani Road, which could complicate future construction activities if the flyover project moves forward.
He added that these concerns have already been communicated to the Karachi mayor for consideration.
Development Budget Announced
During the briefing, Dr. Ahmed also presented Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town’s performance report and announced a Rs. 4.7795 billion budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year.
According to him, 75% of the total budget has been allocated to development projects aimed at improving infrastructure and municipal services across the town.
