Pakistan to Introduce Digital E-Passport System with Online Applications and Home Delivery

ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has announced plans to gradually replace traditional Machine-Readable Passports (MRPs) with a modern digital e-passport system, making passport applications more convenient through online services.

The initiative aims to simplify the passport application process by allowing citizens to apply digitally, pay fees online, and receive their passports at their homes.

Online Passport Applications Through Mobile App

Director General of Passports Muhammad Abdul Khaliq said the new system is designed to modernize passport services using digital technology.

Speaking during an interview with ARY News’ Bakhabar Savera, Khaliq explained that applicants will be able to submit passport applications through a mobile application integrated with NADRA’s Pak ID platform.

Under the proposed system, users will be able to:

  • Submit passport applications online
  • Upload photographs and required documents
  • Pay passport fees through digital payment methods
  • Track their applications
  • Receive passports through home delivery

Enhanced Security Features

According to the Director General, Pakistan launched its first e-passport in 2022 and upgraded the system in 2025 to meet international standards.

The latest e-passports include laser engraving technology and digital security certificates, offering stronger protection against forgery and identity fraud.

Better International Compatibility

Khaliq also said Pakistan is completing its registration process with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Once finalized, Pakistani e-passports are expected to be compatible with more automated e-gates at international airports, helping travelers complete immigration procedures more quickly.

Traditional Services to Continue

Officials clarified that citizens who experience difficulties with online applications or biometric verification will still be able to visit passport offices or NADRA centers to complete their applications.

The government also plans to accept digital documents where applicable and conduct online interviews for certain cases. In addition, passport fees can be paid through mobile banking applications and digital wallets, providing applicants with more convenient payment options.

The move is part of Pakistan’s broader efforts to digitize public services and improve access to government facilities through secure online platforms.
