Utah Continues Measles Outbreak After One Year, Health Officials Concerned
Utah has marked one year of ongoing measles outbreaks, with health officials warning that the situation is still not fully under control. The extended outbreak raises concerns about the United States maintaining its measles-free status.
Over 680 Cases Reported
Since the first outbreak began on June 20, 2025, more than 680 people in Utah have been infected.
Unlike outbreaks in some other U.S. states, the spread in Utah has affected multiple regions and has been difficult to contain, particularly in communities with lower vaccination rates.
Widespread Exposure Locations
Health officials report that cases have been linked to exposure in:
- Healthcare facilities
- Retail stores and supermarkets
- Restaurants
- Youth sports events
- School activities
In one major incident, exposure during a high school wrestling championship led to dozens of confirmed cases.
Why Measles Is a Serious Concern
Measles is considered one of the most contagious diseases in the world. It can spread quickly in unvaccinated populations and cause severe symptoms, including:
- High fever
- Rash
- Persistent cough
- Ear infections
- Diarrhea
Possible Complications
While many patients recover, measles can lead to serious complications, especially in:
- Infants
- Pregnant women
- People with weakened immune systems
Complications may include:
- Pneumonia
- Brain inflammation (encephalitis)
- Vision loss
- In rare cases, long-term neurological damage
Vaccine Protection
Health experts emphasize that the measles vaccine is highly effective, offering around 97% protection after two doses.
Officials continue to encourage vaccination as the most effective way to prevent further spread.
