Pakistan Slip Further in ICC World Test Championship After Slow Over-Rate Penalty

Pakistan’s position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings has weakened further after the team was penalized for a slow over-rate in the first Test against Bangladesh.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) deducted eight points from Pakistan after they fell short of the required over-rate during the match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. The team was found to be eight overs behind once time allowances were taken into account.

Points deduction and financial penalty

Following the sanction, Pakistan’s points total dropped significantly, further affecting their standing in the WTC cycle. In addition to the points deduction, the team was fined 40 percent of their match fees.

Match referee Jeff Crowe imposed the penalty after Pakistan captain Shan Masood accepted the offence and agreed to the sanction, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

Impact on World Test Championship standings

The penalty has added pressure on Pakistan in the early stages of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Before the deduction, Pakistan had earned points from one win and two losses in their opening matches.

After the adjustment, their position in the table has dropped further, reducing their margin for error in upcoming fixtures.

Australia remain at the top of the standings, followed by New Zealand and South Africa, while other teams continue to compete for early positioning in the cycle.

Pakistan face tougher road ahead

With only a few points from their opening matches, Pakistan now face an important challenge in upcoming Tests to stay competitive in the championship race.

The team will need improved discipline in both performance and match regulations to recover in the standings as the cycle progresses.
