All-Female Referee Team Makes History at FIFA World Cup 2026
The FIFA World Cup 2026 witnessed another historic moment as an all-female officiating team took charge of a men’s tournament match, marking a significant milestone in football history.
The match between Czechia and South Africa, which ended in a 1-1 draw on 18 June, was officiated by referee Tori Penso, along with assistant referees Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt. This was only the second time in World Cup history that an all-female refereeing team has overseen a men’s match at this level.
The development comes four years after women officials first appeared in a men’s World Cup match during the 2022 tournament in Qatar, when a female refereeing team officiated the group-stage game between Germany and Costa Rica.
Notably, the 2026 officiating team is also the first all-female crew from the United States to take charge of a men’s World Cup match, highlighting a growing trend of inclusion in international football.
Assistant referee Brooke Mayo reflected on the experience, noting that while the team views itself as a standard officiating unit, the impact of their presence is often recognized by others.
She shared that many young fans and FIFA volunteers have expressed inspiration and pride in seeing women officiate at the highest level of the sport.
According to Mayo, the achievement represents more than personal success, emphasizing that opportunities in professional sport are possible through dedication, hard work, and persistence.
The milestone has been widely seen as another step forward for gender representation in global football officiating.
