Argentina strengthen foundations with Empowerment support for World Championship

(Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail)
Argentina head to the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship after one of the most significant results in their recent history. Their gold-medal finish at the 2023 Pan-American Cup was the team’s first title at the event and a clear sign of the progress being made both on and off the court.

That success came during a period of targeted support through the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment programme. In 2023, the Argentine Volleyball Federation received $100,000 in coaching support for the women’s national team. The project was completed ahead of the Pan-American Cup and contributed to the team’s technical development and performance.

In 2025, a second round of support of $100,000 was approved for another 12 months of coaching. The current project is ongoing and focused on strengthening leadership, training systems and long-term planning. Knowledge transfer has also helped improve internal operations and governance.

Las Panteras have become a regular presence at major international events. The 2025 edition in Thailand marks their eighth appearance at the World Championship, with their best result coming in 1960 when they placed eighth. They have featured in every edition since 2014.

The current squad brings together experienced players and a strong core developed through the national pathway. Outside hitter Paula Yamila Nizetich and libero Tatiana Rizzo continue to play key roles in leadership and defence, while Victoria Mayer sets the rhythm as playmaker.

Coach Daniel Jorge Castellani will lead Argentina at the World Championship

Bianca Farriol and Candelaria Herrera provide presence at the net, with Farriol earning Most Valuable Player honours at the 2023 Pan-American Cup. Erika Mercado contributes as opposite, and Daniela Bulaich adds consistency in reception and attack.

Argentina’s playing style is based on structure, timing and cohesion. Many of the team’s key players have come through the ranks together, building familiarity and trust that translate into competitive performances on court.

In Thailand, Argentina are drawn into Pool D alongside Czechia, the United States and Slovenia. All matches will be played in Nakhon Ratchasima. Las Panteras open against Czechia on 22 August, then meet the USA on 24 August and Slovenia on 26 August

With a continental title in hand and fresh Empowerment support, Argentina will look to carry their form into Thailand, rely on their core group, and push for stronger results against some of the toughest teams in the world.
