‘I’m ready’: Jorja Miller embraces golden edge at first Rugby World Cup

SVNS Star Jorja Miller Draws on Olympic Experience Ahead of Rugby World Cup Debut

Fresh from an intense pre-World Cup camp with the Black Ferns, Sevens superstar Jorja Miller is ready to make her mark on the biggest stage in 15-a-side rugby. With the 2025 Rugby World Cup just weeks away, Miller is preparing to compete for the openside flank position alongside seasoned co-captain Kennedy Tukuafu.

Despite having only two caps for the Black Ferns compared to Tukuafu’s 30, Miller brings a wealth of experience from her Olympic success, including a gold medal from the Tokyo Games. This background has helped her adapt quickly to the demands of international rugby’s premier event.

“It still feels a bit unreal right now,” Miller shared with Newstalk ZB. “I think once we arrive in England and see all the World Cup branding and excitement, it will really hit home. But my Olympic experience has definitely prepared me for this moment, and I’m ready.”

Known for her physicality on the SVNS circuit, Miller acknowledges the challenges of transitioning to the 15-a-side game, especially given her smaller stature for a flanker. Her focus is on leveraging her strengths and tactical awareness to dominate physically in matches.

“Being a loose forward, the physical aspect is key,” she explained. “I might be smaller than some others, but I use that to my advantage by being agile and smart around the breakdown.”

Miller’s skill set shines through with her ability to create turnovers at the breakdown and break through tight defensive gaps on attack—traits that make her a natural fit for the number six and seven jerseys.

While some have speculated about a position switch, Miller remains committed to her role as an openside flanker but is open to new opportunities in the backs if needed.

“I love being involved in the thick of the action around the ball,” she said. “Playing flanker suits my style, but I’m flexible if the team needs me elsewhere.”

With the Rugby World Cup kicking off soon, all eyes will be on Miller as she brings her Sevens agility and Olympic experience to the traditional format, aiming to help the Black Ferns continue their legacy on rugby’s biggest stage.
