Premier League to Debut ‘Ref Cam’ for Fans This Weekend

Football fans are set to enjoy a brand-new viewing experience as the Premier League introduces referee cameras for the first time this weekend. Inspired by the successful trial at the FIFA Club World Cup, the technology will let viewers see the action from the referee’s perspective.

According to The Guardian, selected referees on the opening day of the 2025/26 season will wear the so-called “Ref Cam”, providing broadcasters and fans with unprecedented insight into match incidents and decision-making.

How It Works

  • Clubs Approve the Trial: Premier League clubs have given the green light, with Sky Sports and TNT Sports ready to showcase the footage.

  • Instant Replay Access: While the camera won’t stream live, its footage will be available almost instantly for TV replays and social media clips.

  • Successful Test Runs: The system was trialed earlier this summer in the Premier League Summer Series in the USA, including matches like Bournemouth vs West Ham and Manchester United vs Everton.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has already approved wider use of the technology in domestic competitions. FIFA Referees Committee chairman Pierluigi Collina praised the earlier trials, saying they “exceeded expectations.”

If the Premier League trial proves successful, the ‘Ref Cam’ could soon become a regular feature in all matches—bringing fans closer than ever to the on-pitch drama.
