Ohtani Shines Early, O’Hoppe’s Late Heroics Power Angels to 6-5 Win Over Dodgers for Series Sweep
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani delivered a strong performance on the mound and at the plate, while Logan O’Hoppe’s clutch two-run single in the eighth inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a thrilling 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night, completing a season sweep in the Freeway Series.
Ohtani pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out seven — including two strikeouts against Mike Trout. At the plate, he tripled and scored in the first inning before being retired in his final three at-bats.
For the Dodgers, Will Smith homered and Mookie Betts added two RBI singles. The defending World Series champions have now dropped four straight games and slipped to second place in the NL West behind the San Diego Padres, who visit Dodger Stadium next.
The Angels, despite being below .500, managed to win all six meetings with the Dodgers this year — setting a new franchise record with seven consecutive victories over their city rivals.
Ohtani, making his first pitching appearance at Angel Stadium since his 2023 elbow injury, kept the Dodgers in check for most of the night. His only major blemish was a home run to Taylor Ward in the second inning.
Rookie Bryce Teodosio provided a defensive highlight in the seventh with a leaping catch at the wall to deny Andy Pages a home run. Brock Burke (6-1) earned the win in relief, while Kenley Jansen recorded his 23rd save of the season.
