Pakistan’s 5G Spectrum Auction Faces Delays Amid Legal Disputes
Islamabad –
The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology has voiced serious concern over prolonged court battles delaying Pakistan’s long-awaited 5G spectrum auction. Lawmakers warned that continued setbacks could leave the country lagging behind in the global digital race.
During the briefing, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman explained that auctioning 5G spectrum requires freeing up specific frequency bands. However, the critical 2600 MHz spectrum remains locked in litigation. “Whenever one High Court rules in the government’s favor, the opposing party moves the matter to another court,” added the IT Secretary.
Officials assured senators that the federal government has crafted a strategy to fast-track the legal process. The Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) has already petitioned for early hearings, but the issue remains unresolved.
Senators expressed frustration over the years-long delay. Senator Afnanullah questioned why no out-of-court settlement had been explored, while the Committee Chairperson urged the government to push for urgent hearings to clear the way for 5G.
The Committee has now summoned FAB officials to its next meeting for a detailed update on the stalled spectrum auction.
