Pakistan Among 25+ Countries to Suspend Mail Services to the US
Islamabad: More than 25 countries, including Pakistan, have temporarily suspended mail services to the United States following Washington’s decision to impose new taxes and duties on all categories of international mail.
Pakistan Post Confirms Suspension
Pakistan Post announced that it has halted all mail dispatches to the US, warning that booked parcels and letters may be returned under the new rules.
The decision comes after an executive order (No. 14324) issued by the US government on July 25, which officially ended the decades-old duty-free facility for incoming international mail.
New Rules Disrupt Global Postal Flows
Under the revised system, all foreign mail destined for the US is now subject to taxes and customs duties. The change has caused significant disruption to global postal networks, with several airlines also refusing to transport mail shipments to the US.
Major Economies Affected
Some of the world’s largest economies — including China, the UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, Germany, France, Russia, Austria, and Singapore — have also suspended their postal services to the US.
UPU Steps In
The affected countries have raised the matter with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized UN agency that regulates international postal cooperation. The UPU is currently in talks with US authorities to help resolve the issue and restore normal operations.
