UK Pledges £1 Million Emergency Aid for Earthquake-Hit Afghanistan
London, September 2, 2025 –
The UK government has announced £1 million in emergency aid to support Afghan families affected by a powerful earthquake that has killed over 1,000 people and injured more than 3,250.
The funding will be channeled through international partners to ensure critical healthcare and emergency supplies reach the most vulnerable, avoiding direct reliance on the Taliban administration.
The aid will be split between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), helping deliver vital assistance to earthquake-stricken regions in Kunar and surrounding provinces.
British Foreign Minister David Lammy emphasized the UK’s commitment to the Afghan people, stating, “This emergency funding will help our partners provide lifesaving healthcare and essential supplies to those hardest hit by this disaster.”
The earthquake struck on Sunday, causing widespread devastation in remote areas and complicating rescue efforts due to limited infrastructure and ongoing funding challenges.
