Punjab Approves Lahore Elevated Expressway Project Worth Rs. 120 Billion
The Punjab government has finally given the green light to the long-awaited Lahore Elevated Expressway project, a landmark initiative designed to tackle traffic congestion and improve travel times in the provincial capital.
Key Features of the Project
The 11-kilometer signal-free expressway will connect Main Boulevard Gulberg directly to the M-2 Motorway, creating an alternate corridor for commuters. Officials highlight that the project will:
-
Reduce traffic pressure on Lahore’s busiest roads
-
Cut down travel time for daily commuters
-
Lower fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions
LDA Officials Call It a “Game Changer”
On Thursday, LDA Director General Tahir Farooq inspected the proposed route, visiting major points such as:
-
Main Boulevard Gulberg
-
Jail Road
-
Shama Stop
-
Samanabad
-
Gulshan Ravi
-
Band Road
During the visit, Farooq described the project as a “game changer” for Lahore, given the city’s rising traffic demands. He was also briefed by LDA Chief Engineer Asrar Saeed and NESPAK experts, who explained the technical aspects and emphasized how the expressway will link Gulberg to the motorway toll plaza, benefitting millions of vehicles each year.
Rising Project Costs
Originally estimated at Rs. 30 billion, the project has faced multiple delays that pushed costs significantly higher. Sources within LDA now confirm the revised cost has ballooned to nearly Rs. 120 billion.
What This Means for Lahore
Once completed, the Lahore Elevated Expressway is expected to revolutionize urban mobility by offering a faster, greener, and more efficient route for commuters — a much-needed step for a rapidly growing metropolis.
