IHC Suggests Checking Students’ Lunchboxes to Curb Drug Use in Schools
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday proposed that students’ lunchboxes may need inspection to help tackle rising drug use in educational institutions.
Hearing a petition by the Lucky Foundation, Justice Raja Inam Ameen Minhas directed the Ministry of Interior, Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), and Islamabad Police to submit a detailed progress report for January to September 2025 within two weeks.
Officials reported that from January to April, 255 kg of heroin and 126 kg of hashish were seized in Islamabad, with 689 cases registered and 709 suspects arrested. Schools have also been included in awareness campaigns following earlier court orders.
Justice Minhas emphasized that awareness alone is insufficient, calling for practical monitoring. He noted that station house officers (SHOs) must proactively oversee their areas and suggested lunchbox checks to prevent drugs or harmful items from entering schools.
The Private Schools Association (PEIRA) confirmed that instructions have already been issued to schools to curb drug use.
The court adjourned the hearing for two weeks, awaiting the authorities’ detailed reports.
