England Shine Under Tuchel With 5-0 Win Over Serbia

September 10, 2025: England delivered their most convincing performance yet under manager Thomas Tuchel, cruising to a 5-0 victory over Serbia in a World Cup qualifier.

Despite being without key stars such as Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Cole Palmer due to injuries, the Three Lions impressed with a fluid and dominant display. Young talents Morgan Rogers, Noni Madueke, and Elliott Anderson stepped up with standout performances, giving Tuchel plenty of selection options for the future.

Tuchel: “Reputation Counts for Little”

Speaking after the match, Tuchel praised his squad’s spirit and discipline, stressing that selection will be based on form, attitude, and teamwork rather than reputation.

“The competition is on,” Tuchel said. “If you are in camp, you must be in your best shape, best behaviour, and help the team grow. This was teamwork in its purest form.”

The England boss added that he is not afraid to make bold calls, even if that means leaving out big-name players.

Learning From Setbacks

Tuchel admitted he was unhappy with England’s performance in June, when they struggled against Andorra and Senegal. That experience, however, led him and his staff to simplify tactics and give players clearer instructions.

“One of the learnings was clarity,” Tuchel explained. “We told the players exactly how we play, the structure, and where the competition lies. From there, the intensity and accuracy improved — and it all clicked against Serbia.”

No Over-Reliance on Stars

England’s emphatic win without some of their biggest names drew comparisons to past debates about fitting stars like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard into the same lineup. Tuchel dismissed this approach, saying the focus must remain on the collective.

“This is a team sport,” he said. “If a big player misses a camp or a tournament, we need solutions. We focus on those who are ready and available to be the best versions of themselves.”

A Personal Passion for the World Cup

With England now close to securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Tuchel reflected on his long-standing admiration for the tournament. He recalled being inspired by Italia ’90, even imitating stars like Chris Waddle and Paul Gascoigne as a young fan.

“I was watching like crazy,” Tuchel smiled. “In my garden I was Chris Waddle with the collar up — I was Paul Gascoigne too.”

What’s Next for England?

The 5-0 win not only boosts England’s qualification hopes but also highlights the depth and hunger within the squad. Tuchel’s emphasis on clarity, discipline, and teamwork could mark a new chapter in England’s journey toward the 2026 World Cup.
