India Crushes West Indies for 162 on Day One of Ahmedabad Test
October 2, 2025
India’s fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah dominated the West Indies batting line-up on day one of the first Test in Ahmedabad, dismissing the tourists for 162 runs before tea.
Playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India captured seven wickets between Siraj and Bumrah, putting the West Indies on the back foot in their quest for a first Test victory in India since 1994.
Early Wickets Give India the Upper Hand
West Indies captain Roston Chase won the toss and opted to bat, but the visitors struggled on a moisture-heavy pitch that favoured India’s seamers.
-
Tagenarine Chanderpaul was caught behind by Dhruv Jurel off Siraj for a duck on his return to the side.
-
John Campbell followed soon after, caught behind off Bumrah for 8.
-
Early strikes left West Indies at 20-2, struggling to build partnerships.
Key Contributions Cut Short
Roston Chase (24), Shai Hope (26), and Justin Greaves (32) provided brief resistance, but India’s bowlers maintained control:
-
Brandon King (13) was bowled by Siraj after a poor leave.
-
Alick Athanaze (12) edged Siraj to slip.
-
Kuldeep Yadav (2-25) castled Shai Hope to break his fighting stand of 48 with Chase.
After lunch, Siraj removed the West Indies skipper for 24, and debutant Khary Pierre was trapped lbw by Washington Sundar for 11. Bumrah claimed Greaves and Johann Layne to mark his 50th home Test wicket, while Kuldeep wrapped up the innings by dismissing Jomel Warrican for 8.
India’s Home Test Under New Captain
This Test is India’s first at home under Shubman Gill, following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. India aims to bounce back after their 3-0 home series loss to New Zealand last year.
Meanwhile, the West Indies are missing key seamers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph, making this their first tour of India in seven years.
India’s early dominance sets the tone for a strong start in the Ahmedabad Test, with West Indies facing a tough challenge to recover.
