Pakistan’s Major Dams Reach Maximum Water Capacity
Oct 10, 2025
Pakistan’s major reservoirs have reached their peak storage levels, marking a positive development for the country’s agriculture and power generation sectors. According to the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), the Mangla Dam has achieved its full water conservation level of 1,242 feet, as reported by ARY News on Thursday.
WAPDA confirmed that the current water volume in the Mangla reservoir stands at 7.277 million acre-feet (MAF). Earlier this year, both Tarbela and Chashma dams had already filled to capacity, with Tarbela Dam reaching its maximum level of 1,550 feet back in August.
At present, the combined water storage in the Mangla, Tarbela, and Chashma reservoirs totals 13.316 MAF, providing ample reserves for irrigation and power needs.
Boost for Agriculture and Power Generation
Officials highlighted that the abundant water levels are expected to benefit Pakistan’s agricultural productivity while also ensuring stable hydropower generation in the coming months.
Additionally, WAPDA noted that work on the Mangla Refurbishment Project is progressing steadily. Once completed, the project will increase the dam’s electricity generation capacity from 1,000 megawatts to 1,310 megawatts, further strengthening Pakistan’s renewable energy resources.
