PTA Approves Framework to Enable Satellite Internet Services in Pakistan
Apr 15, 2026
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new Fixed Satellite Services licensing framework aimed at facilitating satellite-based internet services for consumers across the country.
The move is designed to streamline the licensing process by creating a single regulatory pathway for companies offering satellite internet services nationwide.
🌐 Starlink and Other Providers May Enter Market
Under the new framework, companies using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites—such as SpaceX’s Starlink, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and OneWeb—could eventually provide high-speed internet services in Pakistan once all regulatory approvals are completed.
The initiative aligns with international standards and is intended to support next-generation connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is limited.
📡 Focus on Rural Connectivity
Officials said satellite internet could significantly improve connectivity in rural regions by reducing reliance on physical infrastructure such as fiber cables and towers. This would help expand access to digital services in areas with weak or no broadband coverage.
Pakistan has already taken steps under its national policy framework, including the National Space Policy 2024 and the Space Activities Rules 2024, which require satellite operators to register with relevant authorities before launching services.
⚠️ Challenges Remain
While the development is seen as a major step forward, officials noted that high costs remain a key challenge. As a result, satellite internet services are currently more common for enterprise use, such as banking and backhaul connectivity, rather than widespread consumer adoption.
