India Removes Senior Education Officials After Examination Marking Issues

Indian authorities have removed senior officials from the country’s main school examination board following widespread concerns over marking errors that affected millions of students.

The decision comes after reports of irregularities in results and criticism of a newly introduced digital evaluation system used for national examinations.

Cybersecurity concerns and marking complaints

The controversy emerged after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) acknowledged vulnerabilities in its online marking system. The system, introduced this year, was designed to improve efficiency and accuracy in result processing.

However, some students reported incorrect grades and cases where results appeared to be assigned to the wrong candidates. Around 1.8 million students took this year’s Grade 12 examinations, which are a key academic milestone in India.

Following the concerns, CBSE said it had addressed the identified security issues and opened a re-evaluation portal for students to submit complaints regarding their results.

Leadership changes at CBSE

In response to the situation, CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta were transferred to other government departments, according to an official order issued on Tuesday.

The board’s administration has faced growing scrutiny in recent weeks over its handling of the examination process.

Student and public reaction

The issue has triggered strong reactions among students and education observers, with calls for greater transparency and accountability in the examination system.

Some student groups and online movements have also demanded reforms in the national testing process, while discussions on social media continue to grow.

Previous examination-related concerns

The controversy comes shortly after another examination issue, when a nationwide medical entrance test was cancelled following allegations of a question paper leak.

Authorities later launched an investigation, and arrests were made in connection with the case.

The incident has renewed debate in India about the security and reliability of large-scale competitive examinations.

Ongoing developments

Officials say steps are being taken to strengthen the examination and evaluation systems and prevent similar issues in the future. The rescheduled medical entrance exam is expected to take place later this month.
