Rawalpindi Declares Flood Emergency Ahead of Monsoon Season
The district administration in Rawalpindi has announced a flood emergency period from June 15 to September 15 as authorities prepare for the upcoming monsoon season and the possibility of above-normal rainfall.
Officials said the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure due to the increased risk of urban flooding in low-lying and densely populated areas.
Flood monitoring system to be activated
A central flood monitoring control room is being set up at the Civil Defence Office. According to officials, the facility will coordinate emergency response efforts during the monsoon period.
Authorities also said that rescue and emergency personnel will remain on alert throughout the season to respond quickly to any flooding situation.
Emergency preparedness measures
Training exercises are planned after the Eid holidays, involving personnel from Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, and other relevant departments. The drills will focus on evacuation and rescue operations in flood-affected areas, including scenarios involving stranded residents.
In addition, special emergency warning systems that do not rely on electricity are being introduced for use during power outages. These manual siren devices will be installed in flood-prone areas to ensure timely alerts.
Relief camps and safety arrangements
The administration has identified several government schools as temporary relief centres in case of severe flooding. These locations include selected schools along Murree Road, Liaquat Road, and surrounding areas.
Officials said the camps will be activated if water levels rise and evacuation becomes necessary.
Drain cleaning and preventive work
Authorities have also instructed departments to complete cleaning and desilting work on Leh Nullah and surrounding stormwater drains before June 15. These drainage channels are known to overflow during heavy monsoon rains and cause flooding in parts of the city.
Ongoing preparedness efforts
Officials emphasized that all departments are being mobilized to reduce risks and improve response time during the monsoon season. The goal is to minimize potential damage and ensure public safety during heavy rainfall periods.
