World Rugby Confirms Match Officials for Inaugural Nations Cup 2026

World Rugby has announced the match officials for the first edition of the Emirates World Rugby Nations Cup, set to take place in July 2026 across North and South America.

The appointments also include referees for three additional representative matches scheduled in June.

Tournament Overview

The newly introduced Nations Cup will feature 12 international teams from emerging rugby regions. The competition will be played in July and November windows and is designed to provide more structured international fixtures ahead of the expanded Rugby World Cup 2027.

Matches will be hosted across Canada, Chile, Uruguay, and the United States, with teams divided into two pools.

Referee Appointments Announced

Nine referees from seven countries have been selected to officiate the 18 matches scheduled for the July tournament.

Several officials will oversee multiple matches during the competition, ensuring consistent match management throughout the event.

Among the key appointments, Craig Evans of Wales will referee the opening match between Uruguay and Georgia in Montevideo on July 4.

Opening Fixtures and Key Matches

The opening round will also feature matches in Chile and the United States, including fixtures involving Tonga, Zimbabwe, USA, and Portugal.

A special Independence Day fixture in Denver is expected to be one of the highlights of the opening week.

Building Towards Rugby World Cup 2027

The Nations Cup is part of World Rugby’s broader effort to expand global competition and improve playing standards ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Officials say the tournament will help provide more competitive opportunities for developing rugby nations while strengthening the international calendar.

Additional June Fixtures

World Rugby has also confirmed match officials for three representative games in June, including international fixtures across different continents.

These appointments are part of ongoing preparations for the new global rugby structure and expanded international competition cycle.
