LA Stadium Workers Vote on Strike Ahead of FIFA World Cup

Workers at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles have voted in favour of authorising a potential strike just days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to the Unite Here Local 11 union.

The union represents around 2,000 stadium employees, including cooks, bartenders, dishwashers, and other food and beverage staff. It says the vote gives workers the option to take industrial action if ongoing negotiations do not lead to an agreement.

Key Issues in Negotiations

According to the union, discussions with the stadium’s food service operator and relevant stakeholders have focused on wages, working conditions, and workplace safety concerns.

Union representatives stated that progress on key demands has been limited so far, prompting workers to approve strike action with overwhelming support.

Security and Workplace Concerns

The union has also raised concerns regarding worker safety and access to the venue during major events, including the World Cup. It is seeking assurances on workplace protections and clear policies for staff during tournament operations.

Workers have additionally expressed concerns about data privacy and the handling of personal information required for event accreditation.

World Cup Venue Impact

SoFi Stadium, one of the major venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is scheduled to host several matches during the tournament. Any potential labour disruption could affect food and beverage services during games.

Union officials say further negotiations are scheduled ahead of the tournament’s opening matches in the United States.

Outlook

While a strike has not yet been confirmed, workers now have the option to proceed with industrial action if talks fail to produce a resolution. Both sides are expected to continue discussions in the coming days.
