Pakistan Confirms Muharram Dates, Ashura Holidays Expected on June 25-26
The federal government has confirmed the start of Muharram 1448 AH in Pakistan following the announcement of the moon sighting decision by the relevant authorities.
According to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, the first day of Muharram will be observed on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. The decision was made after the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee reviewed moon sighting reports received from different parts of the country.
With the beginning of Muharram now officially confirmed, the dates for Ashura observances have also been adjusted accordingly.
Based on the updated Islamic calendar, the public holidays associated with Ashura are expected to fall on June 25 and June 26, subject to official government notifications.
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and is considered one of the most significant months in the Islamic calendar. Muslims across Pakistan observe the month through religious gatherings, educational programs, and commemorative events.
Government departments and local administrations are expected to finalize arrangements related to public services, traffic management, and security ahead of the Ashura observances.
Authorities typically implement special measures during Muharram to facilitate religious activities and ensure smooth movement for participants and the general public.
