Awer Mabil Proud to Represent Australia on World Cup Stage
ALAMEDA, California: Australia forward Awer Mabil says representing his adopted country at the FIFA World Cup is a source of great pride, reflecting on a journey that has taken him from a refugee camp in Kenya to football’s biggest international stage.
The 30-year-old, who plays for the Socceroos, shared his story during Australia’s preparations for their World Cup match against the United States in Seattle.
During a media session, Mabil was surprised to see Australian broadcaster David Basheer, a commentator he had watched while growing up. The encounter prompted an emotional response as he reflected on how far he has come since arriving in Australia as a child.
Born in Kakuma, Kenya, to South Sudanese parents who had fled conflict, Mabil moved to Australia at the age of 10 through the country’s humanitarian resettlement program. He later settled in Adelaide, where he began playing organized football and developed his career.
Over the years, Mabil has become an important figure for Australian football, earning international recognition for both his performances on the field and his community involvement off it.
Speaking during Refugee Week, Mabil expressed support for displaced people around the world and encouraged them to remain hopeful despite challenges.
“I would like to send a message of support to people who have been displaced around the world,” Mabil said. “We are competing on one of the biggest stages in sport, and I want people to know that opportunities can arise through perseverance and determination.”
Mabil’s story highlights the positive impact of opportunity, resilience and community support, while serving as an inspiration to many young athletes pursuing their goals.
Australia will continue its World Cup campaign when it faces the United States in its next group-stage match.
