SAN DIEGO: New Zealand midfielder Sarpreet Singh says he is proud to represent both his country and his Sikh heritage on football’s biggest stage at the FIFA World Cup.

The 27-year-old made history by becoming the first Sikh footballer to feature in a World Cup match when he played in New Zealand’s opening 2-2 draw against Iran in Los Angeles.

Singh said the moment carried special meaning for him, his family and his wider community, adding that he hopes his achievement will inspire more players of South Asian heritage to pursue careers in professional football.

“I’m very happy to be the first and to hopefully help create opportunities for others coming through,” Singh said while speaking to reporters. “I hope to see more Sikh, Punjabi and South Asian players in the game at the highest level.”

He also expressed gratitude for the support he has received from fans of Indian and South Asian background, noting that he has felt encouraged by their backing during international competitions.

New Zealand, who are competing in the tournament in North America, are still searching for their first win of the group stage. The team will face Egypt in their next match in Vancouver.

Footballers of South Asian origin continue to feature in various national teams around the world, reflecting the growing diversity of the sport at the international level.
