Punjab Reports Decline in Poliovirus Circulation, Urges Continued Efforts
Punjab health authorities have reported a noticeable decline in poliovirus circulation across the province, along with improved vaccination coverage and stronger campaign performance.
Officials shared the update during a media briefing on polio eradication efforts, noting that recent surveillance data indicates a reduction in poliovirus detection compared to previous years. They credited this improvement to better planning, enhanced monitoring, and expanded vaccination outreach.
A key focus of the discussion was Lahore, which has historically been considered a high-risk district due to its large population, mobile communities, and densely populated urban areas. Authorities said targeted interventions in these areas have helped reduce the number of missed children and improve overall campaign effectiveness.
Health officials emphasized that protecting every child remains a top public health priority. They warned that despite progress, continued efforts are essential to fully interrupt virus transmission.
Community engagement and public awareness campaigns were also highlighted as important factors in improving vaccine acceptance and increasing coverage in vulnerable populations.
Government representatives and health officials praised frontline workers, district administrations, and development partners for their coordinated efforts in strengthening eradication programs.
However, authorities cautioned that even a small number of unvaccinated children could allow the virus to persist, especially during high-risk transmission seasons.
They called for continued cooperation between government institutions, media, civil society, and communities to ensure that every child is reached and vaccinated, with the ultimate goal of a polio-free Punjab.
