New Zealand Level Test Series Against England as Ben Stokes Set for Return

New Zealand produced an impressive all-round performance to defeat England by 253 runs in the second Test at The Oval on Sunday, leveling the three-match series at 1-1 ahead of the deciding match in Nottingham.

Fast bowler Matt Henry played a crucial role in New Zealand’s victory, delivering a match-winning performance with the ball. He claimed six wickets in England’s second innings and finished with 11 wickets across the match, earning the Player of the Match award.

Chasing a challenging target of 463 runs, England resumed the final day at 182-5 but struggled against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 209, giving New Zealand a comprehensive victory.

Henry’s outstanding spell dismantled England’s lower order, while fellow pacer Kyle Jamieson also made valuable contributions with key wickets.

Speaking after the match, Henry credited the team’s consistent bowling strategy and execution, while New Zealand captain Tom Latham praised the pace attack for maintaining pressure throughout the contest.

Ben Stokes to Return for Series Decider

Following the defeat, England head coach Brendon McCullum confirmed that regular captain Ben Stokes will return for the third and final Test.

Stokes missed the second Test after disciplinary action related to a breach of team regulations. Fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who was also unavailable for the match, has likewise been named in England’s squad for the series decider.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated that both players received written warnings regarding conduct-related matters but remain available for selection.

New Zealand’s Strong Batting Foundation

Earlier in the match, New Zealand built a solid platform through important contributions from several batters. Glenn Phillips scored a century in the first innings, while Henry Nicholls produced a century in the second innings to help set England a demanding target.

The victory keeps the series finely balanced heading into the final Test, with both teams aiming to secure the series win in Nottingham next week.
