Former Wimbledon Champion Markéta Vondroušová Receives Four-Year Suspension Over Missed Doping Test

Former Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová has been handed a four-year suspension after refusing to take an anti-doping test, according to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

The ITIA stated that the incident took place in December when the player declined to provide a sample during a scheduled testing procedure. Following a hearing, an independent tribunal imposed the maximum sanction for a first-time offense.

Vondroušová, who won Wimbledon in 2023 by defeating Ons Jabeur in the final, said the situation was linked to mental stress and confusion during the testing process. She explained that the testing officer arrived late at night and, in her view, did not properly identify themselves.

The Czech player addressed the incident earlier on social media, stating that she had been dealing with significant physical and mental pressure in the months leading up to the missed test.

“It is very tough for me to talk about this, but I want to be transparent about my mental health,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “The incident happened after months of stress and reaching a breaking point.”

Vondroušová reached a career-high ranking of world No. 6 in 2023 and was also a finalist at the 2019 French Open.

The suspension marks a major setback in her professional tennis career, and she will be ineligible to compete during the ban period unless the decision is appealed or reduced.
