Diogo Jota and Brother Killed in Car Crash: Speeding Suspected in Tragic Spain Accident
MADRID: The football world is mourning the tragic loss of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother Andre Silva, 25, who both died in a car accident in Spain last week. According to Spanish authorities, early investigations suggest that speeding may have been a factor in the fatal crash.
The accident occurred on July 3 on the A-52 motorway in the northwestern province of Zamora. Police reports released on Tuesday revealed that Jota was likely driving above the speed limit when the vehicle veered off the road and burst into flames.
“All the tests conducted so far indicate that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota,” the Civil Guard stated.
“Everything points to a possible excessive speed beyond the road’s speed limit.”
Speed limits on Spanish motorways are generally 120 kilometres per hour (75 mph). The crash happened on a straight stretch approaching a bend, raising concerns about whether a blown tyre, as initially suspected, may have been worsened by high speed.
A Heartbreaking Loss Just Weeks After Jota’s Wedding
Tragically, the fatal crash came just days after Jota’s wedding to long-time partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. On the day of the accident, Jota had even shared a video of the June 22 ceremony on social media.
The deaths have triggered an outpouring of grief across Portugal, Liverpool, and the global football community. From teammates and coaches to political leaders, tributes have poured in, honoring Jota’s contribution to both club and country.
A Remarkable Career Cut Short
Diogo Jota rose through the ranks with spells at Atletico Madrid, FC Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers before becoming a fan favorite at Liverpool, whom he joined in 2020. He scored 65 goals in five seasons, playing a crucial role in helping the team win:
-
The FA Cup and League Cup in 2021/22
-
A historic 20th English league title last season
He also earned 49 international caps for Portugal and was part of the team that won the 2024 UEFA Nations League.
His younger brother, Andre Silva, was a promising midfielder playing for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
Liverpool Pays Tribute, Training Resumes
Following the tragic news, Liverpool FC postponed the start of their pre-season training. Players including Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Wataru Endo, and Conor Bradley were seen returning to the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday as the club slowly begins to resume activities.
A site of remembrance has also been set up at Anfield, where fans, former players, and members of the public have been leaving flowers, scarves, jerseys, and personal messages in tribute to the late striker.
Pre-Season Plans Under Review
Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly, originally scheduled for Sunday against Preston North End, is under review, and ticket sales have been suspended. The club is expected to make a final decision on the match in the coming days.
Liverpool is also scheduled to embark on an Asian tour later this month, with matches planned against AC Milan in Hong Kong and Yokohama Marinos in Japan.
A Legacy Remembered
As the investigation into the accident continues, tributes continue to pour in for Diogo Jota — a player known for his passion, professionalism, and unforgettable moments on the pitch. His sudden passing has left a deep void in the world of football, but his legacy will continue to inspire fans and future generations.
