At least 12 killed, six injured in Lahore as rain lashes city

Lahore Roof Collapses During Heavy Rain Claim 12 Lives, Prompting Statewide Emergency Response

LAHORE – At least 12 people lost their lives and six others were injured in a series of tragic roof collapse incidents across Lahore overnight, as heavy monsoon rains battered the region, emergency services confirmed on Wednesday.

According to Rescue 1122, three major incidents occurred in Muridwal Village, Mission Colony (Raiwind Road), and Kot Jamal, all within a span of a few hours. A fourth incident was later reported in Mominpura on GT Road.


Incident Details

  • Muridwal Village: Five members of a family tragically died, including 60-year-old Manga, his wife Ishrat (55), and three children. Two others, including a five-year-old, were rescued and taken to hospital.

  • Mission Colony: A roof collapse claimed the lives of 70-year-old Nasreen, 8-year-old Meerab, and 80-year-old Basheer. One individual was injured.

  • Kot Jamal: One death was reported, with three others injured and shifted to a local hospital.

  • Mominpura (GT Road): Three additional fatalities were confirmed, including 14-year-old Sahil Masih.


Emergency Response and Public Advisory

Rescue 1122’s Urban Search & Rescue Team deployed advanced live locator technology to assist in recovery efforts. In light of the worsening weather, all districts in Punjab have been placed on high alert by the Emergency Services Department, under the supervision of Secretary Dr. Rizwan Naseer.

Officials are urging citizens to:

  • Avoid staying in old or unsafe buildings

  • Keep children away from low-lying or flood-prone areas

  • Report emergencies promptly by calling Rescue 1122


Record Rainfall and Flood Risk

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported record-breaking rainfall in parts of Punjab, including:

  • Sheikhupura: 217 mm

  • Okara: 170 mm

  • Lahore: 170 mm

The current monsoon spell is expected to continue until July 17, with risks of urban flooding, flash floods, and structural damage due to windstorms in districts like Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Multan.

Rising Toll from Monsoon Season

According to Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA):

  • 77 people have died

  • 214 injured

  • 74 houses damaged

  • 6 livestock killed
    …since the beginning of the monsoon season.

A flood alert has been issued for hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan and rising water levels are expected in rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Indus.


Government Response

Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed and PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia have instructed all Divisional and Deputy Commissioners to remain on ground and ensure flood relief operations are ready. Emergency control rooms and Rescue 1122 teams are operating around the clock.

“Citizens’ safety is the government’s top priority. Timely precautions and public cooperation are key to minimizing loss,” officials said in a joint statement.
