Victoria Mboko Stuns Naomi Osaka to Win National Bank Open Title
MONTREAL — Canadian tennis sensation Victoria Mboko delivered a fairytale finish at the National Bank Open, capturing her first-ever WTA Tour title with a remarkable 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 comeback win over four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka on Thursday night.
The 18-year-old rising star, currently ranked 85th in the world, is expected to skyrocket to No. 25 following this milestone victory. Mboko joins an elite group of Canadians — Faye Urban (1969) and Bianca Andreescu (2019) — as the only women to win their home tournament during the Open Era.
A Historic Home Victory
Overcoming early nerves and battling a swollen wrist, Mboko found her rhythm in the second set and took full control in the third. When Osaka’s final shot hit the net, Mboko dropped to her knees in celebration as the packed Montreal crowd erupted in cheers.
She then ran to embrace her family and coaching team in a moment filled with emotion and pride.
“When I had that winning moment and saw so many people cheering, it felt surreal,” said Mboko, who was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to Congolese parents and raised in Toronto. “It just proves your dreams are closer than they seem.”
Unforgettable Atmosphere
The electric atmosphere added to the moment, with fans cheering loudly throughout. At times, the chair umpire had to remind the crowd to stay quiet during play.
Mboko addressed the fans after the match, saying:
“It’s been an incredible week here in Montreal. Montreal, je vous aime!”
What’s Next for Mboko
With her breakthrough victory, Mboko has announced herself as a serious contender on the WTA Tour. Her performance this week not only showcases her talent but also inspires the next generation of Canadian tennis stars.
