Akshay Bhatia Shines with Career-Best 62 to Lead FedEx St. Jude Championship
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Rising golf star Akshay Bhatia made a statement in the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, carding a blistering 8-under 62 to take a one-shot lead over England’s Tommy Fleetwood.
Bhatia’s round marked the lowest score of his PGA Tour career, fueled by a spectacular finish: eagle-birdie-birdie over his final three holes.
Playoff Momentum for Bhatia
Entering the FedEx Cup Playoffs ranked No. 45, Bhatia is aiming to climb into the top 50 to advance to next week’s tournament — and ultimately into the top 30 for a chance to compete at East Lake for the $10 million FedEx Cup bonus.
“I’ve been thinking a little too much about rankings and points lately,” said Bhatia. “Today, I just tried to stay relaxed and not force anything. It’s OK to be frustrated with a shot — but not with yourself.”
His composure paid off in the clutch. After a solid day alongside playing partner Harry Hall — who sits just ahead at No. 44 — Bhatia pulled away with a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th, followed by a brilliant approach to 2 feet on the final hole.
Scheffler Stays Steady
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, playing for the first time since winning his second major at the British Open, posted a solid 3-under 67, extending his streak to 10 consecutive rounds in the 60s.
Looking Ahead
The FedEx St. Jude Championship is the first of three playoff events in the PGA Tour’s postseason. With the field trimmed after each round, players like Bhatia are making the most of their opportunity to move up the leaderboard — and in the rankings.
