UAE Issues Updated List of Banned Items in Airplanes

Passengers flying with Emirates should note a new safety regulation starting October: the use of power banks during flights will no longer be allowed.

UAE airport authorities enforce strict rules on items allowed in cabin baggage. Some items are banned outright, while others may be carried under specific conditions or limited quantities. Airlines, including Emirates, may have additional rules, so travelers are advised to check their carrier’s policies before flying.

Prohibited Items in Cabin Baggage at Dubai Airports:

  • Sharp tools like hammers, nails, screwdrivers

  • Scissors with blades longer than 6 cm

  • Grooming tools with parts over 6 cm

  • Swords, knives, and bladed weapons

  • Handcuffs, firearms, ammunition, flare guns, laser guns

  • Walkie-talkies

  • Lighters (only one allowed on person)

  • Sports and martial arts weapons, drills, ropes, measuring tapes, packing tapes, and electrical cables (except for personal travel use)

Liquids and Medical Items:

  • Liquids must be in containers of 100 ml or less, with a total of up to 10 containers (1 litre total)

  • Prescription medicines require a doctor’s note

  • Passengers with metal medical implants should carry a medical certificate

Power Bank Regulations:
Power banks are allowed in cabin baggage only if under 100Wh. Devices between 100Wh and 160Wh may be accepted depending on airline rules but must never exceed 160Wh. Emirates now bans the use of power banks during flights, even if they meet these capacity limits.

Prohibited Items at Sharjah Airport:

  • Bludgeons, baseball bats, and similar weapons

  • Flammable gases, liquids, solids (gas cartridges, gasoline, matches, paint)

  • Dangerous wet substances like calcium carbide

  • Chemical, biological agents, toxic or infectious materials

  • Firearms, knives with blades over 6 cm, martial arts weapons

  • Oxidizing substances such as bleach and ammonium nitrate

  • Non-flammable gases (diving tanks, oxygen cylinders)

  • Radioactive materials

  • Explosives, fireworks, ammunition

  • Suspicious or imitation weapons

  • Disabling devices such as tear gas, mace, stun guns

  • Organic peroxides and other dangerous goods

Restricted Items Allowed Under Conditions:

  • Liquids up to 100 ml per container, stored in a clear resealable bag (20cm x 20cm) and presented separately at security

  • Baby food, prescription medicines, and special dietary items, with proof of authenticity

Travelers should review both airport and airline rules carefully before travel to avoid delays, confiscations, or fines. Staying informed ensures a smooth and hassle-free journey.
