BMW Championship 2025: What You Need to Know
After an exciting finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings have advanced to this week’s BMW Championship. This tournament, the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, returns to Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.
Although many players competed here in 2021, the course has undergone major changes, making it feel almost new—even for the 22 players returning from that event. (Note: Sepp Straka withdrew on Monday, reducing the field to 49.)
Course Updates and Challenges
Caves Valley Golf Club has seen extensive renovations since 2021. The overall course now plays to a par 70, down from 72, with two previous par-5 holes converted into challenging par-4s over 520 yards each. The course stretches 7,601 yards, featuring longer tees and relocated greens on several holes. Notably, the first hole has grown from 365 to 481 yards, and the par-3 17th has increased to 245 yards.
The greens have a new bentgrass strain but maintain a similar speed to previous years, offering consistent but demanding putting conditions. With softer conditions expected early due to rain, followed by dry, hot weather through the weekend, players will need to adapt to varying challenges, including elevation changes and thick rough standing at least four inches.
What’s at Stake?
Beyond the prestige of winning the BMW Championship, all 50 players in the field have already secured spots in next season’s Signature Events. More importantly, the top 30 in the FedExCup standings after this event will advance to the TOUR Championship, the final playoff event.
Those top 30 players also earn exemptions into the 2026 Masters, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship, along with a two-year PGA TOUR membership exemption if needed. With so much on the line, every shot counts this week.
