Power Rankings: See who leads FedExCup top 50 at BMW Championship

BMW Championship 2025: What You Need to Know

After an exciting finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings have advanced to this week’s BMW Championship. This tournament, the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, returns to Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.

Although many players competed here in 2021, the course has undergone major changes, making it feel almost new—even for the 22 players returning from that event. (Note: Sepp Straka withdrew on Monday, reducing the field to 49.)

Course Updates and Challenges

Caves Valley Golf Club has seen extensive renovations since 2021. The overall course now plays to a par 70, down from 72, with two previous par-5 holes converted into challenging par-4s over 520 yards each. The course stretches 7,601 yards, featuring longer tees and relocated greens on several holes. Notably, the first hole has grown from 365 to 481 yards, and the par-3 17th has increased to 245 yards.

The greens have a new bentgrass strain but maintain a similar speed to previous years, offering consistent but demanding putting conditions. With softer conditions expected early due to rain, followed by dry, hot weather through the weekend, players will need to adapt to varying challenges, including elevation changes and thick rough standing at least four inches.

What’s at Stake?

Beyond the prestige of winning the BMW Championship, all 50 players in the field have already secured spots in next season’s Signature Events. More importantly, the top 30 in the FedExCup standings after this event will advance to the TOUR Championship, the final playoff event.

Those top 30 players also earn exemptions into the 2026 Masters, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship, along with a two-year PGA TOUR membership exemption if needed. With so much on the line, every shot counts this week.

Power Rankings Highlights

Here are some key players to watch as the BMW Championship unfolds:

  • Scottie Scheffler (#1): Coming off 12 consecutive top-eight finishes, including four wins, Scheffler is a top contender on any course.

  • Rory McIlroy (#2): After regaining form post-U.S. Open, McIlroy has been strong with recent top finishes and is rested and ready.

  • Justin Rose (#3): Known for winning multiple FedExCup Playoff events, Rose could be a factor again.

  • Cameron Young (#4): Fresh off a breakthrough victory, Young is riding momentum and strong putting.

  • Ludvig Åberg (#5): After some dry spells, Åberg is primed to compete and win soon.

Other notable names include J.J. Spaun, Tommy Fleetwood, Ben Griffin, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Cantlay, Matt Fitzpatrick, Xander Schauffele, Harry Hall, Akshay Bhatia, and Kurt Kitayama.

Final Thoughts

As Baltimore’s Orioles rebuild their team just miles from Caves Valley, the golf course itself has transformed into a tougher test with fresh challenges. While the Orioles aim for their first World Series title in over four decades, the BMW Championship guarantees thrilling competition and rewards for the best players.

With a redesigned course and high stakes, this year’s BMW Championship promises to be a must-watch event for golf fans everywhere.

Cricket West Indies Calls Emergency Meeting to Revive Test Cricket Legacy Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced an emergency strategic intervention following a challenging Test series against Australia, aimed at revitalizing the team’s long-format performance. In response to the recent series defeat, CWI President Kishore Shallow has convened a special meeting of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee. To provide expert insight and guidance, he has invited three of the region’s most celebrated cricket legends—Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara—to join the discussions. These icons will collaborate with existing committee members Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes, and Ian Bradshaw. “To strengthen the discussions, I have extended invitations to three of our greatest batsmen ever: Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara,” Shallow said in a recent statement. Together, the trio brings decades of experience and nearly 28,000 Test runs. Their involvement is intended to offer both inspiration and practical solutions to help guide the next chapter of West Indies cricket. “This engagement is not ceremonial. These are men who helped define our golden eras,” Shallow explained. “Their perspectives will be invaluable as we shape the next phase of our cricket development. We intend for this gathering to result in tangible, actionable recommendations.” While the recent series outcome has prompted reflection within the cricketing community, CWI emphasized the importance of maintaining a forward-looking approach. The board remains committed to long-term planning and rebuilding a strong, competitive Test team. West Indies cricket has seen significant success in the T20 format, but the rise of shorter formats has presented challenges for the traditional Test arena. CWI hopes that renewed focus and expert input will help bridge this gap and encourage greater interest and preparation for red-ball cricket. The strategic meeting is expected to produce a roadmap focused on resilience, performance development, and fostering a renewed culture of excellence.
