Punjab Government to Launch Tram Service in Lahore by February 2026
The Punjab government is set to introduce a tram service in Lahore, with operations expected to begin in February 2026. The news was confirmed by Punjab’s Transport Minister, Bilal Akbar, who shared that the initial tram trial was a success.
The new tram line will connect Thokar to Harbanspura, and each tram will have the capacity to carry 270 passengers. The total cost of the project is estimated at $3 million. Additionally, officials from the Punjab NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority recently visited China to discuss the project and its development.
Metro Services for Other Cities
In addition to the tram service, the government is also planning metro train services for other cities in Punjab. The Faisalabad metro is expected to serve 300,000 commuters daily, while the Gujranwala metro will aim to accommodate 140,000 passengers each day. The Faisalabad Metro project is budgeted at $110 million, while the Gujranwala Metro will require $50 million.
Environmental Benefits
Minister Akbar emphasized that these new transportation projects, including the tram and metro systems, are part of the government’s strategy to combat the growing pollution caused by motorcycles and other vehicles in Lahore. The initiative is expected to help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the region.
With the introduction of these modern transit systems, the government aims to improve public transportation infrastructure and contribute to environmental sustainability.
